History of the Grand Chapter

A Short History of
The Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
1947-2017

Sister Margie Allen, PM
Historian

The first meeting to form the Grand Chapter was held in New Glasgow on May 29th, 1947.  At that time 22 chapters totalling 200 members and 83 delegates attended this meeting.   Also in attendance were 2 delegates from Crystal Chapter #1, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

A motion was passed at this meeting that a Grand Chapter be organized in Nova Scotia.  A second motion was passed that the Prince Edward Island Chapters be admitted to the Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia and that they belong to the same agreement as the other Chapters and therefore the new Grand Chapter was instituted on September 24th, 1947.

The first Grand Chapter Session was held at Port Royal, Chapter #1, in Annapolis Royal.  It is interesting to note that it was the site of the first Masonic Lodge.

In 1947 when the Grand Chapter was formed there were 23 Chapters in Nova Scotia and 1 Chapter in Prince Edward Island and the numbers steadily grew throughout the years to a grand total of 72 Chapters.

As the years have gone by the Chapters have declined in membership and some were forced to surrender their Charter or join with another Chapter.

The Order of the Eastern Star has one project which has been passed down to us through the General Grand Chapter, and it is called “ESTARL,“ Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership.  This is a permanent project of our Grand Chapter.  The purpose of this project is to assist those men and women who are studying for the Christian Ministry and also studying Sacred Music.

In 2015, at the 48th Triennial Assembly of the General Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Service Dog was established as the primary & permanent identifying charity of the General Grand Chapter along with the adoption of a Service Dog Committee as a new Standing Committee. The Order of the Eastern Star advocates for qualified Service Dog Programs and provides financial assistance to such organizations, aiding their efforts to serve mankind and to allow individuals to achieve independance.

Let us be reminded afresh of all the individuals, with all their weaknesses, their strengths, their humour, their sincerity, their individualism that makes our Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island one of unity of our two provinces, memories and shared moments that will be shared forever and always.
